She has written about a variety of topics, ranging from travel to gardening, but her longtime specialty is food and nutrition. She was a food and nutrition reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times for eight years, and is the author or co-author of eight food-related books, including All-American Waves of Grain, The Great Big Cookie Book, the Dictionary of Healthful Food Terms, Wok Every Day, and Very Merry Cookie Party: How to Plan and Host a Christmas Cookie Exchange.

She is also the webmaster of MakeGreatCookies.com, a collection of nearly 200 original recipes for cookies and bars, and lens master of The Baking Sheet on Squidoo.

She likes to cook and especially bake, and thinks chocolate deserves its own food group, although she has been known to eat vegetables and other healthful foods when no one is looking.
